Till 2000

The first Durga Puja was held in Stree Mandal Hall, Poddar School Santacruz, it attracted nearly 500 people, later on after three years it was moved to Balkanji Baari Compound, 25 Juhu Road, Santacruz.

For the first time, we were fostering a spirit of friendship and cooperation amongst ourselves and the devotees of Maa through social activities, sports events, musical gatherings, and religious festivals. The pleasure and satisfaction by organizing it cannot be phrased into words. Since then we host Durga Puja for four days namely Sasmi, Saptami, Ashtami and Navmi. It is indeed astounding to mark the growth and change of our puja in the span of past 60 years. Here are few highlights:

  • For the first five years the number of devotees attending our Puja ranged between 200-500 people/day. The number increased progressively as the years passed to 1000-2000 people/day. Today we welcome thousands of people.
  • Chanda collection began at Rs. 1800 – Rs 2000 during the first few years. Currently, our collection is at 2 Crores.
  • Entertainment always rested under the management of the Mukherjee Family. There were able to attract the best performers. North Bombay Sarbojanin Durga Puja, Santacruz West soon becomes famous for the best entertainment possible in entire Mumbai.

Our “Bhog” became such a specialty making the event more renowned amongst the people. We are few of the people serving lunch and dinner both.
